RESUMEN

Uterine myomas are the most common pelvic tumors in women, which can lead to abnormal uterine bleeding, abdominal pain, pelvic compression symptoms, infertility, or adverse pregnancy. In this article, we provide a dataset named uterine myoma MRI dataset (UMD), which can be used for clinical research on uterine myoma imaging. The UMD is the largest publicly available uterine MRI dataset to date including 300 cases of uterine myoma T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) sagittal patient images and their corresponding annotation files. The UMD covers 9 types of uterine myomas classified by the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO), which were annotated and reviewed by 11 experienced doctors to ensure the authority of the annotated data. The UMD is helpful for uterine myomas classification and uterine 3D reconstruction tasks, which has important implications for clinical research on uterine myomas.

BACKGROUND: Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is a common retinal vascular disease leading to severe vision loss and blindness. This study aimed to investigate and reveal the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying macular edema (ME) recurrence in patients with BRVO through a proteomic approach. METHODS: We detected proteins in the aqueous humor of 14 untreated, four refractory, and four post-operative patients with BRVO-ME and 12 age-matched cataract controls using four-dimensional label-free proteomic and bioinformatics analyses. RESULTS: In total, 84 proteins exhibited significant differential expression between the BRVO and control samples (fold change [FC] ≥ 1.2 and adjusted p-value < 0.05). Compared to the control group, 43 and 41 proteins were upregulated and downregulated, respectively, in the BRVO group. These proteins were involved in cell adhesion, visual perception, retina homeostasis, and platelet activation. Several significantly enriched signaling pathways included complement and coagulation cascades and platelet activation. In the protein-protein interaction networks generated using the search tool for retrieval of interacting genes (STRING), the fibrinogen alpha chain and fibrinogen beta chain constituted a tightly connected cluster. Many common protein expression trends, such as the fibrinogen alpha chain and fibrinogen beta chain, were observed in both the recurrent and refractory groups. Differentially expressed proteins in the two groups were involved in complement activation, acute-phase response, platelet activation, and platelet aggregation. Important signaling pathways include the complement and coagulation cascades, and platelet activation. Protein-protein interaction analysis suggested that the fibrinogen alpha chain and fibrinogen beta chain constituted a tightly connected cluster. The expression of some differentially expressed proteins shared by the BRVO and the recurrent and refractory groups was reversed in the post-operative group. CONCLUSIONS: Our study is the first to analyze the proteomics of recurrent, refractory, and post-operative groups treated for BRVO-ME, and may potentially provide novel therapeutic interventions for the recurrence of ME.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the incidence of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in postmenopausal women with primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO) and enables ophthalmologists to pay attention to ocular surface damage before surgery. METHODS: 165 postmenopausal women with PANDO and 115 postmenopausal women with a normal lacrimal drainage system were enrolled in this prospective study. Based on the results of lacrimal duct irrigation and age, the participants were further subdivided. The incidence of different severities of MGD in different groups was calculated and analyzed by the chi-squared test. RESULTS: The incidence of MGD in the PANDO group was 81.21%, and in the control group, it was 46.96%, which was significantly higher in the presence of PANDO (p < 0.001). The incidence of severe MGD in the complete and incomplete PANDO groups was higher than that in the control group (all p < 0.05), and no significant differences were observed between the complete and incomplete PANDO groups. The incidence of moderate MGD was significantly higher in the complete PANDO group than in the control group (p < 0.001). When age was considered an independent variable, the results revealed a significant value for patients aged < 70 years (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed a prodominantly high incidence of MGD in postmenopausal women with PANDO, especially in a complete PANDO or aged < 70 years. Ophthalmologists need to pay close attention to MGD in postmenopausal women with PANDO.

One critical approach for promoting the efficiency of memory is to adopt selective encoding strategies to prioritize more valuable information. Past neuroimaging studies have shown that value-directed modulation of verbal memory depends heavily on the engagement of left-lateralized semantic processing regions, particularly in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC). In the present study, we used high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to seek evidence for a causal role of left VLPFC in supporting the memory advantage for high-value items. Three groups of healthy young adult participants were presented with lists of words to remember, with each word accompanied by an arbitrarily assigned point value. During the first session, all participants received sham stimulation as they encoded five lists of 30 words each. Two of these lists were immediately tested with free recall, with feedback given to allow participants to develop metacognitive insight and strategies to maximize their point total. The second session had the exact same structure as the first, but the groups differed in whether they received continued sham stimulation (N = 22) or anodal stimulation of the left VLPFC (N = 21) or right VLPFC (N = 20). Those lists not tested with immediate recall were tested with recognition judgments after a one-day delay. Since no brain stimulation was applied during this Day 2 test, any performance differences can be attributed to the effects of stimulation on Day 1 encoding processes. Anodal stimulation of left VLPFC significantly boosted participants' memory encoding selectivity. In comparison, no such effect was seen in participants who received right VLPFC or sham stimulation. Estimates of recollection- and familiarity-based responding revealed that left VLPFC stimulation specifically amplified the effects of item value on recollection. These results demonstrate a causal role for left VLPFC in the implementation of selective value-directed encoding strategies, putatively by boosting deep semantic processing of high-value words. Our findings also provide further evidence on the hemispheric lateralization of value-directed verbal memory encoding.

Subaerial landslides sliding into shallow water are physically modeled in a three-dimensional wave basin. The generated impulse waves are highly nonlinear, and a large-scale splash zone is formed above the waves. Such impulse wave characteristics are different from those from landslides into deep water that are completely submerged after sliding. The recorded wave profiles included three wave types, namely nonlinear oscillatory wave, nonlinear transition wave and bore-like wave, mainly depending on the relative slide thickness and slide Froude number at impact. Bore-like waves were possible produced only by landslides into shallow water in three-dimensional experiments. The conversion rate of landslide kinetic energy at impact into the wave train energy is 1 to 18%. Energy conversion characteristics are compared with other two- and three-dimensional studies on landslide-generated waves and the results are discussed.

In a glance, observers can evaluate gist characteristics from crowds of faces, such as the average emotional tenor or the average family resemblance. Prior research suggests that high-level ensemble percepts rely on holistic and viewpoint-invariant information. However, it is also possible that feature-based analysis was sufficient to yield successful ensemble percepts in many situations. To confirm that ensemble percepts can be extracted holistically, we asked observers to report the average emotional valence of Mooney face crowds. Mooney faces are two-tone, shadow-defined images that cannot be recognized in a part-based manner. To recognize features in a Mooney face, one must first recognize the image as a face by processing it holistically. Across experiments, we demonstrated that observers successfully extracted the average emotional valence from crowds that were spatially distributed or viewed in a rapid temporal sequence. In a subsequent set of experiments, we maximized holistic processing by including only those Mooney faces that were difficult to recognize when inverted. Under these conditions, participants remained highly sensitive to the average emotional valence of Mooney face crowds. Taken together, these experiments provide evidence that ensemble perception can operate selectively on holistic representations of human faces, even when feature-based information is not readily available.

Perception of facial identity and emotional expressions is fundamental to social interactions. Recently, interest in age associated changes in the processing of faces has grown rapidly. Due to the lack of older faces stimuli, most previous age-comparative studies only used young faces stimuli, which might cause own-age advantage. None of the existing Eastern face stimuli databases contain face images of different age groups (e.g. older adult faces). In this study, a database that comprises images of 110 Chinese young and older adults displaying eight facial emotional expressions (Neutral, Happiness, Anger, Disgust, Surprise, Fear, Content, and Sadness) was constructed. To validate this database, each image was rated on the basis of perceived facial expressions, perceived emotional intensity, and perceived age by two different age groups. Results have shown an overall 79.08% correct identification rate in the validation. Access to the freely available database can be requested by emailing the corresponding authors.

Inhibiting only cell apoptosis or necroptosis in photoreceptor cells does not protect them against death after traumatic retinal detachment. This study was designed to evaluate the coregulatory effects of the deubiquitinating enzyme cylindromatosis on the apoptosis and necroptosis of photoreceptor cells in experimental retinal detachment. Lentivirus Cyld shRNA was generated and used to suppress cylindromatosis expression in Sprague-Dawley rats. Three weeks after injection of lentivirus Cyld shRNA, retinal detachment surgery was performed. Transmission electron microscopy, propidium iodide staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling assay, electroretinography, and determination of ubiquitination and phosphorylation of receptor-interacting protein 1 were performed to detect the apoptosis and necroptosis of photoreceptor cells. Knockdown of cylindromatosis expression led to inhibition of caspase 8 activity, a decrease in the number of apoptotic photoreceptor cells, and an increase in the ubiquitination level of receptor-interacting protein 1. In addition, the number of necroptotic cells decreased and the phosphorylation level of receptor-interacting protein 1 decreased dramatically; significant protective effects of RNA interference-mediated suppression of cylindromatosis expression on electroretinogram wave were observed. Cylindromatosis coregulates the apoptosis and necroptosis of photoreceptor cells by regulating the ubiquitination of receptor-interacting protein 1 after retinal detachment.
